Spiritual Principle: Spiritual Awareness

Step 11 offers us the opportunity to seek constantly through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with our Higher Power.

Assignment 1:

  1. Read, highlight, and jot down questions/comments from Into Actionpages 85-88.
  2. Put together and personalize, your own morning and evening prayer/meditation routines that serve You and fit with your beliefs. Try out methods until you find what works. You may want use the suggestions below to help. Keep in mind: The only wrong way to do prayer and meditation is not to do it at all.
    1.  Step 11 Prayers and Meditations Page in the Study Guide for Overeaters captures the BIG BOOK suggestions for working Steps 10 and 11.  It provides prayers, meditations, reminders, and questions to help us stay in fit spiritual condition and improve our conscious contact with GOD morning, during the day, and at night. For the evening inventory, we are told to ask ourselves the following questions:
        • Was I resentful?
        • Was I selfish?
        • Was I dishonest?
        • Was I afraid?
        • Do I owe an apology?
        • Have I kept something to ourselves which should be discussed with another person at once?
      • Was I kind and loving toward all?
      • What could I have done better?
      • Was I thinking of myself most of the time or was I thinking of what I could do for others, of what I could pack into the stream of life?

 

    1. Possible apps to use:

The My OA Toolkit app. from Google Play or Apple Store looks like the icon to the left. You may also use a computer by going to the login page for myspiritualtoolkit.com and changing the “*Type”: to My OA Toolkit (OAT). You will have to register to use the Toolkit. This app offers prayers, and ways for completing step 10’s and step 11’s.

Insight Timer, an app. from Google Play or Apple Store looks like the icon to the left. It offers all kinds of meditations.

 

    1. Breathing Apps. Members uses Breathe + on an iphone and iBreathe on Android. There are many other breathing apps available.
    2. Meditations – There are many meditations available on insight timer, YouTube, and other apps. Surrender School is working on meditations for each Step. They will be available by December, 2023.
    3. 2-Way Prayer is one method used by many members, conduct an internet search to find out more about it, and see if it may work for you.
    4. Gratitude Lists: There are many formats for making them.
    5. Tapping. Brad Yates and other practitioners have tappings available on a variety of subjects. Here is an alphabetical list of the hundreds of free tappings Brad offers.


Assignment 2:

  1. Read highlight, and jot down questions/comments from the AA 12 & 12, Step 11.
  2. Keep the following tips in mind:
    • “There is a direct linkage among self-examination (Steps 4-9 & 10), meditation and prayer. Taken separately these practices can bring much relief and interwoven, the result is an unshakable foundation for life.” (pg. 98)
    • Meditation is about keeping the channel between yourself and your HP open.
    • “Prayer, as commonly understood, is a petition to God.” (pg. 102) But most of the time we are asking God to do OUR will. Seek God’s will for you through meditation and ask for the guidance, strength and courage to carry it out in prayer.
    • When spirituality becomes mechanical it loses its power to transform.
